Will it work with PVC as well as Hypalon?

Absolutely, there are two main differences in applying Tuff-Coat to PVC rather than Hypalon. First a mechanical bond must be created with a light sanding or scuffing of the surface with a 3M pad (or equivalent) before application of the Basecoat. This is recommended but not required on Hypalon boats. The second difference is that you must wait longer for the Basecoat to cure. This could be as much as a week. Topcoat will apply the same as on a Hypalon boat.

What is the coverage?

Coverage is 40-60 sq. ft. per quart for Basecoat and 60-80 sq. ft. for Topcoat. You need a one-quart Kit for an eight-foot dinghy (contains one quart Basecoat and one quart Topcoat).

What about worn areas?

Basecoat should be applied to high wear areas first and recoated if needed prior to application of Topcoat. If the area is really worn, a patch can be applied by coating the worn area first with Basecoat and then, before it dries, coating a piece of canvas with Basecoat and applying it to the worn area. Recoat the patch with Basecoat once it is in place. Make sure the Basecoat is dry–it make take anywhere from 12 hours to 4 to 5 days depending on temperature and humidity. When dry, apply Topcoat.

What is the Basecoat?

Basecoat is a solvent-based chlorosulfonated, polyethylene resin vehicle containing UV inhibitors and vulcanizing agents.

How do you apply the Basecoat?

Surface must be clean and dry—free from mildew, oil, wax or grease. Leaks other than pinhole size must be repaired prior to application. If mildew is present, wash boat thoroughly with a solution of one part household bleach and three parts soapy water. After surface is cleaned, dried and repaired, begin application of Basecoat. Stir Basecoat well.

When applying, you may thin up to 10% with high quality Xylene so that the Basecoat goes on smoothly and the brush doesn’t pull. Do not work the coating or brush it in, lay it on. Coat worn and problem areas first. Deflate boat until flaccid. Allow to fully dry (at least 24 hours). Fully inflate and test for missed pinhole leaks. Rinse, dry and repeat application to any problem areas. Allow Basecoat to dry, then paint a complete coat over entire tube surface. Cleanup with Xylene. Allow Basecoat to fully cure before application of topcoat. Depending on temperature and humidity, this could range from 24 hours to a week. If strong chemical smell is present, Basecoat has not fully cured. When fully cured, proceed to Topcoat application.

What is the Topcoat?

An easy to apply waterborne acrylic vinyl designed to bond with Basecoat. It will create a rugged, flexible surface that seals and shields that material it covers. Topcoat provides an extremely tough, flexible surface, its properties allow more consistency of color than Basecoat. It is available in Gray, White, Black, Red and Orange.

How do you apply the Topcoat?

Surface must be clean and dry — free from mildew, oil, wax or grease before application. Basecoat must be fully cured (no strong chemical smell). Do not apply outside if rain is forecast within 12 hours. Stir well. May be thinned with maximum 5% distilled water. Allow 3-4 hours for first coat to dry before applying second coat. Topcoat cleans up with water.
